PALEOANTHROPOLOGY AND ARCHAEOLOGY FOR HISTORY STUDENTS
Frank Martos. Highlands School, Seville.

PARTS OF THE CRANEUM
To identify and describe the craneum of a hominid, palaeoanthropologists need to know in detail each part of it, mostly those parts which are important features that differenciate one species (e.g., the Australopithecus) from others (e.g., the Homo Habilis).
THE MOST important parts of a craneum that an archaeologist must know to identify the speceis are:
I. SKULL: BIG/ SMALL
II. FOREHEAD: LOW
ii. MANDIBLE (JAW): BIG /PROJECTED/SMALL
III. ORBITAL TORUS: LARGE/ WEAK
IV TEETH: (VERY) LARGE/ (VERY) SMALL
V: NOSE: LARGE/SMALL
VI. BRAIN SIZE: 400-500-600-700 CC
